Lisa Buchanan, author of The OCD Hope Book, was the keynote speaker the quarterly meeting and conference of OCD TEXAS, the newly formed affiliate of the International OCD Foundation, in the Dallas Fort Worth area on February 19, 2011.
Lisa wrote her book for parents of children with OCD, but her presentation encouraged anyone with OCD or anyone who loves someone with OCD to never give up hope because the disorder, once considered untreatable, can now be treated proper therapy and medication so that it need not get in the way of a full and enjoyable life.
Lisa’s son was 8 years old when he suddenly became extremely fearful of “poisons” possibly hidden in plants outdoors and tortured by dreadful thoughts that “something bad might happen” or that someone he loved might die. “When my son’s OCD busted into our lives, I just wanted someone to tell me he would be alright and not end up in a straight jacket locked up in a mental health facility. I searched for that reassurance all over the internet and could not find anything that sounded positive. I was fortunate enough to find some wonderful books that armed me with knowledge and hope. I think it is incredibly important for anyone suffering with OCD, or a parent or family member watching someone they love being tortured by this ugly disorder to know…….. There is HOPE!!!”
